I got 56 solo on my first try, so there wasn't really a need to run multiple times or "fish." But.. whenever I watch streams, I see ppl sitting on like 50 keys of 58, 59, 60, etc.

You find a group of people that want the same level of keys that you do, and run trials until the group breaks apart. Joining a "good" clan helps, otherwise there's a few communities in game, and your friends list to get people from.
I farmed about 50 keys to get rank 2 on wizard last season. Season 1 however, I got top10 on monk with only about 15 keys.
The idea is that if you get a rift with unburied and moon clan, you can do a level much higher then you could with average mobs, since they give much better progress... so you get enough keys to actually get that to happen. You can take that a step further and farm for both unburied and stonesinger, who is the boss with the least hitpoints.
