edit, a more detailed explination.

tried to post what i remembered about the vid without watching it again. i guess the elite dmg is calculated different, thought he had gone with a soj in his setup but i think it was before the bk nerf.

anyway, tl;dr dmg and cc merc both have uses.



CC templar skills: 1,2,1,1
20% jang-do dagger w/ att spd and rerolled to lightning dmg (rare but you could get a slow/freeze/stun/blind/chill/immobilize on hit secondary too)
cannot die token w/ block %
80% ess of johan w/ att spd, cdr, % area dmg
35% wyrdward att spd, cdr, % are dmg
double unity att spd, cdr, % are dmg
or if not using unity: oculus w/ att spd, att spd (again), cdr
or if no oculus: justice lantern % block, att spd, cdr
1.5 freeze of deflection: % block, slow/freeze/stun/blind/chill/immobilize secondary
special effect numbers are the most important, 80/35/1.5, then att spd, then block, then cdr, then % are dmg. ancient does not matter for cc.
if you don't have a stat listed above, then having a dps one is not horrible. str/chc/att spd are priority.
now... if you are above gr 54, then you are likely fishing for specific rift guardians to go higher, and most players are using an immunity amulet. That means they are exiting out at RG if it isn't their boss (or stonesinger). For poison there's 3? For lightning there is 1, etc. The idea here is that you are 100% immune to their dmg so it's just a time race. In that case you want to maximize your dmg, you dont' care about cc'ing them. Pain Enhancer and some abilities like rend give you dmg buff if the boss spawns adds, which some of these do. But if you cc them they don't spawn adds, and you get a lot less dmg!
So in that case go for a pure dps build, though blizzard nerfed the bk ring, it could mean a 1 second difference. I've seen conflicting info about % elite on follower but quinc believes it works so I'll go with that:
DMG templar skills: 1,2,2,1
ancient sun keeper, high dmg, 10% dmg, str/8% elite dmg (it can roll it twice), 30% elite dmg, socket (white/red)
ancient cannot die token w/ str, 100% chd, block %
80% ancient ess of johan w/ str, 20% phys/att spd/dmg, 10% chc, socket (red)
ancient bul-kathos w/ str, att spd/dmg, 6% chc, socket (red)
double unity str/att spd/dmg, % elite, 6% chc, socket (red)
or if not using unity: ancient SOJ w/ 20% phys, 6% chc, str, socket (red)/att spd/dmg
ancient lidless wall: 20% phys, str, 10% chc, socket (red)
your priority is chc, str, phys, att spd/dmg range. bul-kathos is capped now to follower dmg (so raising str and dmg is good), and the chd cap is 150% (he has 50% with no gear) so only get that on relic. there is a chc cap I forget but unless you have perfect gear you're unlikely to hit it. The biggest DPS increase you're making is not having your follower CC, which allows pain enhancer to work. rend bloodbath also can help you. Note that if you one shot adds with rend then you're not really getting a benefit here (lower GR).
