Well I saw the thread and then tried it and saw that it worked to show the different ID numbers on an item, however someone in the thread has shown that the socket # was different for 2 different items, so maybe those numbers still randomize for each number and thus it would not be effective. I did not have enough time / items to fully test and compare if all the IDs would be the same.

Regardless you can still ID an item. unplug your internet and then relog and it will be unid.

Edit: You can at least use it to check how many Affixes an item has.

If regular letters between both itemlinks don't work for you, try letters with accents like è, à, ç. Those worked for me. Generating certain symbols with ALT codes also works (http://www.alt-codes.net/ - not all of them work, 174 and 175 work, for example, 1 doesn't). And you can probably just copy paste those accented letters from here as well.
