Well, maybe it's just a display. Like, you can equip different items with IAS on them, and the "attack per second" value will change based on your equips. That'd be a nice addition, instead of having to memorize values it'll show right on screen.

That what I was thinking as well.

Well from the interview with Diablo 3 Leaders, so far as I know is, The Female, or Male, and the Equipments on the characters are the customization in Diablo 3.
