Last time I played, you still had to play through the story, paragon levels were giving you stat bonuses, no rifts, adventure modes, grifts, or anything else like this.

Could someone give me a TLDR or a link explaining how to start a new character today and what to do?

Whole reason I'm coming back is to try out necro unless he already has builds for that. I don't really think I need an exact build or anything of that nature, I was just hoping for general strategy. Like will I be a total idiot for going through story mode or should I be farming some combination of the quick quest mode or w/e it's called etc?

Open up your control panel, go to add or remove programs, find Diablo III on that list and click remove, and there you have it, you just beat Diablo III.

Yup. Played hundreds of hours and had my fill prior to rifts or adventure mode coming out.
