Everyone likes a new CoD for at least a little bit. Let me know how you feel after playing for months without finding an obsidian steed, inferno, speakeasy, or breakneck and dying to those who have it, even though you did everything right in the gunfight. Losing gunfights only because luck gave them a better gun isn't fun.

Obviously the objective of the game isn't to win, but to have fun.

To some merit you're right. But look at games like d2, the gear was rarely every identical enough where it came down to 100% skill vs other people.

I hate dying to the bal or asm1 of any variant due to their superiority over other guns. The variants only added that little extra edge. The guns will still be overpowered without those variants.

To some degree, but stats were always in some way different, especially when you're considering your 300 fg amulet/ring/circlet/etc vs the 30000fg one. In enough the difference between the 300 and 30000 fg one may not be worth the difference to a poorer person, but it could give you enough of whatever stats to tank one more hit than the other person, which could decide a match.


My point being, the more desired weapon variants will give you an edge, but not enough where it matters greatly.

Variants aside, the TTK and weapon balance in AW is non-existent. The variants only exacerbate the problem. Every CoD has obvious weapons that shine, but at least some of the "fun" guns could win games. Honestly, my favorite gun variety has to be Ghosts. I had a minimum 2.3 KDR with every single SMG. iirc my CBJ had a 2.5X. Using an obscure weapon in AW just doesn't happen.

Also, for a lot of people the golden age of D2 was before full blown hacks. Gmod and TMC were around for a while, and even RA wasn't that bad. Once people auto'd everything, then things truly died down. Shops with perfect diadems and jewelry weren't as prevalent as they are now. Most people had perfect gear, 40-lifers, and were level 90-95. Virtually everyone had the common, perm amulets/boots. The only wealth gap for the most part was 08 valks, b-tals, and 70-15s on east.

Skill can beat wealth though in GM settings. Technically dueling is like poker..patient is a huge factor. Whoever gets bored enough to stop kiting will lose.

the objective of the game. is INFACT. to win. the amount of fun you have will not make your team the winning one. therefore it is not an objective.
