incoming tl;dr
the further down the rabbit hole you go into nutrition the more confusing it gets. that being said, there are simple fundamental things you can follow if you truly want to be health-conscious.
quality, whole foods. things with few ingredients that are all real food. avoid processed shit. ever been to wawa? it doesn't take 3 dozen ingredients to make a pretzel. especially avoid processed meats. check out farmers markets for quality produce. go to your local butcher for quality meat. the added bonus is you're supporting the small businesses in your community, the downside is you're spending more for meat. a lot of butcher shops have closed in the last decade alone, and that's honestly a shame.
learn to cook. hands down the best thing anyone can do for themselves as far as their wallet and their health is concerned. take those whole foods that are boring as shit alone and make something incredible with it. sirloin with caramelized onions. thai coconut curry. chicken tikka masala. mushroom, leek, and tarragon pasta. all delicious stuff that anybody of any skill level can make! the bonus here is you can cook a lot at once and then pack it for meal prep.
chicken breast doused in bbq sauce with rice and steamed veggies gets old quick for meal prep. don't deny yourself delicious food.
make your own bread. makes your house smell amazing. do you know how many nutrients are in a whole, unprocessed grain? fuck pepperidge farm, bread should not have sugar in it! talk to people at the farmer's market, they'll be able to tell you where to get whole grains from. alternatively, you can get bread from a baker. those guys are suffering too.
not that there's anything wrong with sugar. but oats and rice are grains. and coffee has strong antioxidant properties.
