Running
Hey I am trying to lose weight. I have lost about 10-15 in last month or two and so far and have been doing some core exercises and pushups daily. I am looking to incorporate running/jogging/walking into my daily routine. How do I start? I have what you call 10 hour a day computer need bod and don't know where to start? Do I need a certain type of shoes? How long should I go for and how fast/hard. Idk whether it's better to go all out long as I can or go for time and distance. Newb tips appreciated. I used to play hockey and lacrosse but it's been 8-10 years since I was doing 2 a days. Is it a good idea to jump into a race and go at my.own pace in a 5k and measure my time each month or something? How do I track progress?
Nutrition
Diet consists of 2-3 egg in morning. Protein bar snack, veggie/salad/ light lunch. Protein bar snack. Dinner with some kind of meat with more veggies. This is a day where I would be super hungry. Some days I only eat like 5 oz of chicken or a protein bar cause I have stomach problems
I drink probably 10 bottles of water/sparkling water a day, is sparkling water okay to drink?
I eat a lot of bell peppers (not green... fuck the green ones)
Fish/seafood I used to love and after living in florida I had bad fish one day from a cheap dive bar and now it makes me throw up.
No alcohol/drugs
Only drink water
Allergic to dairy
Can't eat spicy things
Can't eat much salt
Sugar gives me migraines and I cut out all coffee/caffeine when the stomach told me I can't drink sugar or milk in coffee anymore
Idk what other nutrition things might be needed to help me.
Not a fan of using machines
I would like to highlight some things you have going for you that normally hold people back, with these this I think you are in a great place to start and as bjones said, you should have no problem seeing the results you wish with increased activity:
- No alcohol/drugs
- Only drink water
- Allergic to dairy
- Can't eat much salt
- Sugar gives me migraines and I cut out all coffee/caffeine when the stomach told me I can't drink sugar or milk in coffee anymore
Onto some of your questions:
is sparkling water okay to drink? Watch out for additives such as sugar and sodium or artificial flavors.
Do I need a certain type of shoes? How long should I go for and how fast/hard. Idk whether it's better to go all out long as I can or go for time and distance. Is it a good idea to jump into a race and go at my.own pace in a 5k and measure my time each month or something? How do I track progress?I see a lot of people that lose weight and then gain back what they lost plus some additional. Often times it's because they aren't making lifestyle changes and are just applying a band-aid to the situation. If you don't enjoy what you are doing oftentimes it is not sustainable. SO FIND AN ACTIVITY YOU LOVE.
That being said, if you have interest in running, which a lot of people find crazy addicting, I suggest finding a local 5K a few months from now in your area and signing up. Then following a couch to 5k program and keeping track of your progress however you are comfortable... Can use your phone calendar, a three ring binder, a notepad on your phone, or there are some couch to 5k apps, doesn't really matter as long as you are keeping track and sticking to your plan. And completing the race! From there you can continue to work on improving your training plan to increase the speed of your 5k or sign up for a bigger race like a 10k, a half marathon, or a full marathon. At the beginning of the program you will be walking the majority of the time... Before you go out and invest in $80+ on shoes I say just get moving and see if you want to stick with it. If you don't that is okay... Find something that interests you... (Swimming, golfing, tennis, kickboxing, cycling, kayaking, rock climbing, yoga; I could keep going for days.) Also... You mentioned hockey and lacrosse, you might want to consider an activity you can participate in that is team based. Tennis, basketball, roller hockey, and softball are examples of team sports I know are pretty easy to find pickup leagues for. If you liked the accountability of the team you'll find these activities may help keep you motivated to come back again and again versus running where even with a running group or partner a lot of times you are counting on only yourself to stay disciplined.
I could provide another whole post on nutrition as that is my forte, however I think increased activity is where you really need to focus. I won't stop you from adding more whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits and veggies to your diet though

LMK if you have any additional questions or want some clarity on anything.
