Are negatives good or bad? Or does it depend on the exercise? I've read that negatives are a great way to build strength/muscle?

Just recently hurt my back while doing front raises, weight didn't seem like it was too much to bring vertically while being a controlled tempo, but while lowering the weight I heard a loud pop between my shoulder blades where the neck bone is.

Haven't been able to lift for a while now due to the pain/discomfort. Dr gave me anti inflammatorys and pain killers but it hasn't gone away completely.

Thoughts?

I always here a lot about the eccentric movement contractions and they are the best to build strength/muscle.

I'm currently working a lot around my teres major to increase the back width, currently basing my back routine on the eccentric movement when doing lat pulldowns

I don't have much result in if it is best so far for me but, it's what I hear so I am testing it out and doing my own little body study

eccentric contraction is the most valuable part of any exercise. you get the best tension stimulus from that component of the movement, at the lowest energy cost. in other words its the most economical stimulus you can get for growth. you dont even need to do supramaximal negatives (more weight than you can curl concentrically), i bet if you just do strict tempo and form slow eccentric phases you would see lots of growth

negative is the most positive thing in lifting

but yeah, there's a lot of agreement that doing your negatives will help gains of various kinds

i remember reading about negatives when i was in 7th grade (mid-cretaceous), and i felt like a giant scientist doing so. it had a big influence on my early training and it was something i could tell the other young lifters about (brofessor feels)

negatives are useful for bodybuilding but nearly worthless for functional training. they also come with a higher risk of injury.

Yeah but, it's for my front double bi and front lat spread. They are lacking because of my teres major
