I'm just posting this here for opinions and tips. I'm not really sure how helpful this subforum is.

My buddy and I have been going to the gym 3-4 days a week for 3 weeks now, because we're training to do the tough mudder in the summer. I'm not a buff guy at all, actually pretty scrawny. 6'5 180lbs. Ive always been a cardio guy when it comes to 'working out' but am wanting to focus on building some muscle for the upper body obstacles in the TM.

This is my first exposer to going to they gym and hitting weights, so far I really enjoy it. Although i must admit I've been sticking to a routine of 20 minutes cardio and then 30 minutes of exercise machines and back to heavy cardio. Which I'm reading is not the proper way to train, either that routine or the fact that I'm using machines. But as a new guy they are really easy to use and I'm nervous about hurting myself with the bars/free weights.

One thing I do want some opinions on though is supplements. I really don't want to turn into a meathead and start taking 5x types of supplements but I would like to maximize my efforts here if possible. I'm reading that there are numerous types and protienband creatine and fish oils etc. but is there a simple general protein supp that I can take at any point in the day that will help me? I'm already healthy and am not looking at taking anything for weight loss.

Don't need supplements, eat properly.

If you're training specifically for tough mudder make sure you're incorporating a TON of pull-ups and other body weight exercises

I think there's a website called road to 20/30 pull-ups or something that has a decent regiment, you're definitely going to want to do that, the grip strength and upper body pulling strength you gain from being able to do 20 proper pull-ups in a row is way more beneficial for an obstacle course than anything else you could do

Thanks for the information, I'll look into that. Wife and I already eat pretty healthy, so that won't be a problem at all.

Pull ups are tough for me haha, I think I've already got a disadvantage with my long skinny arms (less leverage)

Tough mudder is for casual fitness people aka you will not be required to do a single pull-up. If you did, more than half the contestants would fail
