What do current reputable studies say about total protein intake in a day, with regards to muscle maintenance and muscle growth?

I would guess needs are closer to 0.75g per lb of bodyweight for a bulk. But I don't know.

Animal-based protein has been linked to cancer. The worst offender is reportedly casein. I avoid casein but I still take whey isolates. The thing about cancer: literally everything you ingest outside of vegetables and water (assuming they aren't polluted) causes cancer, either directly (like smoking cigarettes) or indirectly (like simple CHO), although 'indirect' and 'direct' are relative to the number of physiological mechanisms involved. So ... here's the thing. If you want to eat clean and still eat animal based foods:

- don't eat it cooked above 350 F, ideally even above 325
- avoid charring it at all costs
- don't eat the fat
- avoid eating overly processed protein

But before you freak out, at least if you avoid casein, if you lift and generally eat clean and live clean and still take whey isolates, your chances of getting cancer are already reduced compared to that of the average person who isn't taking a protein supplement. (i.e., think of the other crap you could be doing/eating)

I haven't heard about protein powders being a risk factor. If animal based protein simply means from meat then that would be true. Off the top of my head red meat and high fat dairy products increase risk for prostate cancer and red processed meat increases risk for colon cancer.
