Hello, I came down with tonsillitis with fever, aches and chills lasting only a short few days. I had somewhat severe pain in my tonsils(which I took ibuprofen for) and white/yellowish patches as well. I toughed it out for a few days but then decided to see a doctor. They performed a rapid strep test which came back negative and a mono spot test which was also negative. I just received a call from the doctor today saying the culture test they did was positive for group A strep.
My question is at this point having received the news that it is indeed strep, do I still need to acquire antibiotics because my fever was gone days ago and the patches are decreasing on my tonsils and the pain is going away. It seems I am on the mend and getting better already, do I still need antibiotics?
Thank you for your time
rapid strep test isn't 100% sensitive and the culture takes time, so some cases slip through the cracks like that. I suggest getting the antibiotics, it's protective against rheumatic fever, abscesses, etc, also you'll be infectious for a shorter duration of time.
