Hello, I came down with tonsillitis with fever, aches and chills lasting only a short few days. I had somewhat severe pain in my tonsils(which I took ibuprofen for) and white/yellowish patches as well. I toughed it out for a few days but then decided to see a doctor. They performed a rapid strep test which came back negative and a mono spot test which was also negative. I just received a call from the doctor today saying the culture test they did was positive for group A strep.

My question is at this point having received the news that it is indeed strep, do I still need to acquire antibiotics because my fever was gone days ago and the patches are decreasing on my tonsils and the pain is going away. It seems I am on the mend and getting better already, do I still need antibiotics?

Thank you for your time

rapid strep test isn't 100% sensitive and the culture takes time, so some cases slip through the cracks like that. I suggest getting the antibiotics, it's protective against rheumatic fever, abscesses, etc, also you'll be infectious for a shorter duration of time.

mane don't let tonsillitis get bad yo.

I was on a trip last year in Europe and the tour bus I was on had a few people that got tonsillitis. both girls couldn't talk when they had it and one girl waited so long to get it treated that she had to be hospitalized because her tonsils had gotten so swollen that they were nearly blocking her airway.

Mine wasn't too bad, it was fairly painful though and seems to be in remission. But I'm going to take the penicillin anyway

this is all that matters. take advice from your doctor, not strangers on jsp.
