I've been thinking about learning how to fight. There's so many disciplines out there though, I don't know which one I want to choose. Krav Maga interests me a lot, but there aren't any krav gyms around me, and the one i saw back home was pretty pathetic, didn't really look like they were learning how to fight. I want something intense.

I'd also prefer if it didn't have too big of a learning curve, I don't have long left in melbourne, so I wouldn't be able to train for a while after I leave, and I'd like to atleast learn the basics in a few months or so.

/co-sign on these for the following two reasons:

1. The practicality of using these skill-sets in an "in the wild" environment.

2. The widespread availability of both, so you can continue training once you move.

in the wild? is boxing actually effective? I always thought boxing was just teaching you how to fight other boxers.

Boxing is superior to the way many other disciplines are taught, in that it has a live-sparring component built-in.

You can learn forms or katas all day, but learning timing and distance is only something you can pick up by actually Doing The Thing.

You learn how to effectively defend yourself better (and quicker!) if you have someone *actually* trying to punch you in the melon. :P

No. However, boxing *does* consistently have live-sparring as part of it's curriculum, from gym to gym to gym.

imo, a discipline that has some kind of live-sparring / randori / non-scripted training as part of it's regular curriculum is of greater utility than a discipline that doesn't have that.

Judo and Muay Thai also come to mind, but, depending on where you wind up moving, it may be harder to find a school / gym that offers either.

I don't think in a few months time that I'd be up to a level to live spar. It's more just for peace of mind, especially cuz I want to travel to a lot of 3rd world countries soon. I'm not too keen on continuing training until I get home a few years from now.

Boxing in 3rd world countries is not going to help you

Do not fuck around with the locals in Bali / vietnam / thailand
