Right then: we all know it's the language of noobs and laymen, and we all know it's used as a marketing gimmick.

Does anyone know when / where "toned" was first used as a fitness buzzword?

Hoping that if we can understand where / when it was first used in the context it usually is, we can finally put it to f'kn rest.

I was just on Facebook instead of studying for physics and one of the trending news topics is "Britney Spears: Singer Posts Photo of Herself That Shows Her Toned Abs"

Not really what you're looking for, but I read it and thought of your post haha.

Definition: The normal state of elastic tension or partial contraction in resting muscles (in regards to fitness). After some shitty research it looks like the idea of being "toned" or looking for muscle definition goes all the way back to the slave trade and originates around the 15th century.

That's EXACTLY what prompted this.

I want to figure out how to get "toned" the fk outta common vernacular.

My understanding of toning is just the appearance of muscle on a person's body, most commonly used in reference to slim people with little fat. I don't see the problem with it?

weird thing to take issue with.

maybe it's a buzzword because it takes the mouthful of "lose body fat and obtain muscle structure that is well-defined" and makes it into "get toned"

...so here's the question of the hour. while you were reading up on mrs. Spears was her abdominal area in fact, lacking body fat and having well-defined muscle structure?

I wouldn't say well defined. She looks to be around 110 pounds.

People have a problem with the word because it's widely used for such a variety of physiques.
