I've lately been through extremely depressing things in my life and I just need a break from it all. I've chosen working out and being fit as my outlet.
Today I bought protein and I already had weights and everything, but I'm a college student so the rec always has all the machines.

I've tried and tried to find a good plan (bodybuilding forum, etc) and I feel like I'm just running to dead ends because all of these plans feel very generic.

I'm just asking for general advice as in what to do as a regimen and how to do them ex. how many sets/reps for a exercise and resting periods, etc. I'm just not in a state where I'd like to talk and socialize as much as I used to, so I am quite nervous to ask anyone and rather seclude myself. Once things get better I will try and socialize at the gym and in general.

Thank you. I didn't wanna post on a bodybuilding website or anything because they'll all just say use search or something in that aspect. I'd just like a perspective from a different group.

edit: I'm 130, 5'7, and would like to gain lean muscle and look tone. I am not worried about losing fat, I wear a size 26-28 in jeans... Just need to bulk up.

There's your problem. Generic is going to yield the best results at this point.

Don't overcomplicate everything and think you're a special case, just do what's proven then down the line you can fine tune.

Check out starting strength, or more preferably all pros beginner routine.

There's good information in the stickeys under the "workout program" section at bb.com

Okay I looked on there, sorry I am jsut bad at navigating... I kept getting extremely advanced workouts or just squats and crunches kind of deal... I am wondering if a full body workout or if a certain muscle group is better to use.

exercises that should be the foundation of your routine are squats, deadlifts, pullups/lat pull down, rows, bench, shoulder press

be sure whatever routine you pick has those or an equivalent (leg press is not equivalent to squats)
