the knurling of the bars at my gym are very very worn, I think it might grip the cotton better

well of course your back is a more slippery bare and sweaty than with a shirt on, but if you're having problems with the bar sliding off your form is probably bad to begin with
bar hasn't slid off, wrists just getting sore from holding the bar so tight cuz it feels like it's gonna slip off
