I got a phonecall from a gym that is big around my area. There's something like 17 or 19 locations within a 100km radius. I had put my name in for a draw.

They called me up and told me I didn't win the big year pass, but that I had won a 2-week free package which included a free training session & two weeks at the gym and some other small things.

So I go with it, I make my appointment. I figure why not, I've got my home gym but I miss going to a public gym. I get there, they give me a tour, I ask about the package and the guy tells me yep I won 2 weeks at the gym free and to see him after my workout.

I finish my workout, and he sits me down. He informs me that if I put down $75 that day (sign-up fee), that I get the next 10 days at the gym for free to try it out, and then I can get a refund if I don't want to pay monthly. The monthly cost is $46 a month. Okay, cool, sounds fine... except I thought I was called in because I won a 2-week package, and I wanted to try the gym without any pressure (after all, the only reason I was there is because I signed up for a contest and they called me to inform me I won a package). Long story short they gave me 3 days free to think it over (after double-pressuring me by getting the manager to try to explain to me about how paying $75 that day and giving me 10 days meant no pressure), and have given me two reduced quotes since then via text to try to get me back in there. The best quote I got so far is if I sign up with my little brother, but my brother doesn't want a membership, so I might try to take them up on it just for myself.

They're no planet fitness... they've got a great facility near me... but damn, those pressure sales. And I'm pretty sure if I want to not go for a month, I'd have to pay the re-sign up fee again. Did really enjoy getting to use a couple machines though, been only using free weights for the past couple years.

24 hour fitness did this to me. I told the guy I'd be there and never showed up. He definitely called back and I had my friend talk to him and carry on a long conversation about all the shit they had and then said "just fuckin' with ya," *click!* They said I had won some prize or another too.

I ended up signing up with them when I heard they had a sign on friend bonus. Friend used his old debit card that had no cash on it since he had a free probationary period like you, I signed up with him, had no initiation fee and my monthly fee was $18.

See that's what I like. However, this gym chain requires:
1) An ongoing commitment, you can't stop paying (ie. if you leave for a month on vacation).
2) A sign-up fee.
3) You have to negotiate for good prices, otherwise it's minimum $47 per month with a $150 sign-up fee (which they always discount down to $75 or less for the sign-up).

I don't get it... why would I want to pay a sign-up fee. I just want somewhere to lift weights, and I want to pay for the time I use.

But, the place is nice, and it's close, and I don't mind spending $25 for a sign-up fee if it's $33 a month *AND* they allow me to choose which months I pay for. But that's complicated, since apparently I've heard (researched) that they won't honor the contracts they give you if you don't get a note on your file, otherwise you'll end up getting price hikes or other issues down the line. Really odd.

The pressure upon your fragile shoulders is enormous.

Seriously, do it or don't. I will never make such a deal, personally.

most gyms are crooked and shitty... worked there for years - y'all lucky consumer protection has got your back and that the government protects you. the parasites would otherwise take your blood too...

Half of the people who work in any gyms are cardio bunnies getting fucked by a lot of dudes who come in and about and they're being pressed for sales - many of the personal trainers don't know anything, make very little money and resort to petty crime like slinging n chopping OR they take up other manual labor jobs in their spare time (which often lead them to things like roofing or sales rep style jobs where they end up picking up some kind of "habit") -- actually going to work at one of these places, working your way up and picking on the weaker filth is an easy way to make money preying on other criminals if you're big enough lol
