Tailor it, tuck and wear a belt too or it will look sloppy.

I've gone through with a similar issue. 5'10 here, broad shoulders require large, but torso and arms require a medium, and chest is in between.

You have three options as I see it:

1) Get your measurements done, and buy your shirts tailored from the get-go.
2) Go and get whatever you have tailored right now. This might be a good idea, or it might not be a good idea, depending on what modifications are needed.
3) Be more picky about what you buy, go out and shop around. Try to get something off the rack that fits you. You'll probably want to tailor it anyways though.

I went out and didn't know what the hell I was doing, and about 4 of the shirts I picked up (nice ones for work) were relaxed fits. The arms are slightly too long, the arms are baggy as hell, the torso needs to be brought in. I'm going to get the arms tailored in, and the torso tailored in, and the shirts should be fine.

It comes as a surprise to some (myself included), but just check out some YouTube videos on dress shirt fitting... tailoring pretty much is necessary.

Fit the shoulders, chest primarily. If you have long arms have the tailor drop the sleeves a bit when they fix the remainder. Don't be fooled into purchasing to fit the arms primarily as you'll end up with a dress, even while tucked in.

if you have the money, you can go to a good tailor and they will make you bespoke dress shirts based off of your exact measurements

since it is custom tailored from scratch, it really isn't that expensive for what you are getting though - like $45-$80 for a shirt, depending on your area, maybe more if you want premium fabrics
