I think it was Scott Herman that basically said "Deadlift is a heavy back exercise, you shouldn't use it to build grip strength" And my grip is what's failing first at 225 lbs so I'm not sure if I should get some or just wait until I plateau more.

Okay you are calling stuff pussy shit , but to be fair you are only dead lifting 315 for 1 after a whole fucking year...

I assuming most of your lifts are pretty weak if you are struggling to hold 225... You could always go the over under and use chalk.

Or perhaps you are using one o those fat bars (dont know the name), I personally hate them, but still grip should not be giving out like that at 225..

Edit : As far as your question go, iv been working out now for one year (my anniversary was the other day!) and im working well into my 400s and use no straps , no belt, i use chalk because it just feels nice (more of a placebo thing I think).

you should use them if you feel it'll benefit you

if your grip is stopping your deadlift, you could use them and work on the grip separately and eventually recombine the two

e/ farmer walks or just holding a loaded bar would help increase grip strength

Chalk will help a lot. At least it did for me, my hands get real sweaty around 375.

Also could try mixed grip, or a hooked grip. I used to always do doh, but mixed feels very nice for me now so, to each their own.

Will really help the most imo.. And it won't hurt/cause you tear skin only going with 3/4/probably 500.
