In my opinion, quality of life drops FAST after the 40 hour mark. This is coming from a guy with no wife or kids.

I call BS on people who talk casually about 60+ hour work weeks (unless they are working though residency). Just being away from home doesn't count. I mean actually being on the clock 60+ hours/week.

I am ok with working overtime every now and then, but when it becomes regular I do put my foot down. I find it surprising how little free time I have even though I have no responsibilities aside from my 40hr/week job.

Even a 40 hour work week is for suckers

I'd rather not work and suicide at 65, having lived 3x as long as the average person (In terms of time spent doing what I really want to do) than be some old fuck's slave for 65 years just to die comfortably in 10 more years.

Work is a scam unless you're doing what you love

Just doing the math:

Every day you get 24 hours

24 - 8 for sleep
16 - 1 for cooking / hygiene
15 - 1.5 for daily commute
13.5 - 8 for work

That's 24 - 18.5 before you even GET to enjoy time to yourself, this totally excludes any responsibility outside of your job.

5.5 hours every day at best, assuming your life is totally responsibility free. Most people get nothing.

Compare that to working only what's required to live

24 - 8 for sleep
16- 1 for cooking / hygiene
15 - 1.5 for daily commute
13.5 - 4 for work

That's only 24 - 14.5 instead, giving you 4 extra hours to do whatever you like with (Essentially giving you two lifetimes, since living is really only measured by doing what you love)

It's a no brainer to me, I mean yeah you have to live with less. You won't be partying every week end, you won't have a ton of extra cash to spend on some bitch that wants diamonds, but who wants to spend money on that shit, anyway?

I've always had extras for hobbies and worthwhile things that aren't insanely expensive / stupid to be spending money on.

and I don't care how much you think you lose independence by not working 40+ hours and having a lot of money. Trust me when I tell you that there is no pain that hits harder than realizing you've been giving your life up for some corporate machine that couldn't give a fuck about you.

The key to living a good life is taking account all of the blood suckers that exist in your daily life (These are things like work / girlfriend, etc.)

If you are living with someone, ask yourself honestly if they are even worth it. How much does your bitch suck out of you on a daily basis? When you come home from work, does she ambush you and want to talk about some stupid bull shit that consumes 40 minutes of your time? That's gay, tell her to stop it. Everyone has tons of problems like these that are leeching time / quality of life from them every single day.

and yeah don't even get me started on what I think about the current work condition in the West. Working 40+ hours is retarded, I will never do it and anyone who does should seriously consider making life choices that allow them NOT to do it, before they end up being 65 and realizing "Holy fuck, I just lost my life, now I'm old as fuck and can't get it back. The guy I worked for is now dead and nobody gives a shit about me or my hard work - all I have is this retirement money to show for it." That's a lame reality to end up in.

Yeah, a lot of people in higher salary professions will work while they are younger and then as their kids grow up, they will slow down.

Doctors, dentists, professors, and probably many others like politicians who just "get money" even though they are a lazy bunch of slackers...

So many times you will go to see a doctor/dentist when they are 50 and there is a locum or another doctor/dentist there or they simply "don't work on fridays or mondays anymore"

If I had a high paying job which I some what enjoyed (e.g. investment banking, private equity, hedge funds etc) I wouldn't mind working long ass weeks.

for 9 months I worked 14 hours per day, 7 days per week, that's 96 hour work week.

you get used to working ~ 100 hour weeks pretty fast as long as you don't have a family it aint bad imo.

wake up 6 am - work til 8pm (obviously ate breakfast, lunch, dinner @ work) Even went to the gym at work

8pm - 10pm watch a movie
10pm - 12pm surf web/face til sleep.

5:20 : Wake-up
5:20 - 6:40 : Shit, shower, shave, eat, read a bit, leave for intensive care unit
7:00 - 13:00 : Work
13:00 - 13:20 : Eat
13:20 - 18:30 : Work
18:45 - 20:00 : Back at my place, eat stuff prepared on the weekend, prepare stuff for the next day
20:00 - 22:00 : Study / Video Games / Read, go to sleep

About 56 hours a week
I work-out 3 times a week (twice on the weekend though), play 20 hours + of wow / week, see my friends at least once (and I talk to them everyday on skype/raidcall/whatever)
I had up to recently a girlfriend which I saw about 3 times a week also

Depends if you want nice things, toys, house and live a comfortable lifestyle. Working casual jobs your entire life wont get you far, especially if you have to provide for a family and have mortgages etc.. Thats just my opinion, my job is different I don't always work the entire year, right now I have as much time off as I want.
