So I have been working out on a routine basis now and want to get a bit more serious about it

As of now, I work out a minimum of three days a week. The majority of my workouts are around 11pm when i get off work, but I sometimes will go into the gym mid day.
I work out for an hour sometimes 1.5 hours. I am also on a vegetarian diet.

What I need help on: I currently will drink a protein shake of whey powder after my work out. I would like to know if I should drink whey after my work outs if it's late like 11pm or should I be taking something else.
I'm not too supplement savy and don't know much about the science behind supplements. As far as what I want out of my work outs, my goal would be strength over looking a certain way. At this point it's not about gaining or losing any weight.
Also, I'm currently on a vegetarian diet.

FG donation to best advice unless it comes from cmburns

need the basics, nothing too fancy

you dont need many supplements and it doesn't matter where your protein comes from. whey, beef, chicken, etc. just get the protein in.

all you need is creatine. if your diet is not providing enough micros, take a multi. if it doesn't provide enough protein, buy some whey. fish oil is beneficial too. anything else is superfluous and may benefit you a negligible amount

dont want fg

It's a well known fact u need to drink whey protein 60 minutes after weight lifting

What you probably didn't know is muscle breakdown is created from the very first lift you do. So a 60 minute lifting session means your muscles have already been breaking down for 60 minutes.

To counter this, sip whey protein throughout your entire session

lol

in all seriousness, supplements arent necessary if you are providing your body with all it needs in terms of vitamins, calories, proteins, fats, carbs etc

other things you could try are creatine, i guess, but it wont perform miracles and will most likely cause a psychological dependance

vegetarian diet usually means you need to make sure your protein intake is sufficient (shakes, tofu, beans, lentils, etc)

Any reasoning behind being on your vegetarian diet? Assuming this is something temporary/new to you if you are referring to it as a diet rather than implicitly stating your a vegetarian...But if meat isn't an option a whey protein shake is a better alternative than completely relying on plant based protein which likely isn't supplying you with enough key essential amino acids. In this case I may also recommend using a BCAA/EAA supplement as well as being certain to supplement B12. Try to get whey high in whey protein isolate (aka WPI listed as the first* ingredient on the nutrition label). I would also recommend creatine monohydrate pre-workout with the BCAA/EAA as this should immediately improve workout performance, I would be hesitant to add any sort of stimulant if working out after work late at night as the half-life of caffeine is ~6 hours. How strict of a vegetarian are you, assuming at least lacto due to whey consumption, but what about fish/eggs? The timing of your shake post workout means very very very little nor should you believe any bullshit you hear about "not eating before bed."
