So I took my two free person training sessions at a second gym I go to near my house. The guy is charge of the trainers definitely knows his stuff (masters degree and multiple bachelors - brown belt BJJ and was college wrestler - probably mid 40s now). I have always disregarded paying for PT, as I think it's generally a waste of money. Said guy offered me 6 months for 1 session a week at $30 per session. Originally it was $35 if I did that, but he said he would take out his cut and gave me until the 15th. Thoughts? Any of you ever pay for a PT? Was it worth it? I have mainly been doing the big 3 and what not, and he said in order to safely progress and to get where I want to be I need to work all three muscle fibers (both fast twitch and the slow twitch). He said he will get me where I want to be in those 6 months (appearance wise, not big 3 wise as those goals are a bit further out).

Thoughts?

No pts are pretty much a waste judging by the ones I see and I have been a member of multiple gyms. Grab yourself a workout partner for motivation.

What are your goals?

Goals:

495 deadlift
405 squat
315 bench

hopefully all those for reps, but short term I want to hit 13-15% body fat, I think I'm currently 23-26 range. I also want more mobility.

Currently I'm at:

405 deadlift max
315 squat max
and then I can rep 110 dbs for 3

Edit: I want the weight since I'm pretty big, but I guess looks and mobility might be more important to me currently - I think the lowest BF I have ever been was probably around 17 or 18%

Currently 6'5 around 250

I started weight lifting at the gym in October 2013 for the very first time in my life. I had zero knowledge whatsoever of the different weight lifting exercises, etc. because of this, I decided to use a personal trainer.

My PT charges me $30 per hour and I go the gym 3 times per week so I pay him $90/week. He's adequately trained and educated - kinetics degree, certified, and he's a power lifter (competed in tournaments, held a national squat record, total over 1000).

So I've been using a PT for about a year now. I don't have any intention of stopping soon because I'm still a noob and I still have a lot to learn. I have a tendency to injure myself so having a PT is great because it gives me a sense of security that someone is watching my form and making sure it's in check. He also changes my routine up every month as I progress.

So yes in my opinion I think PTs have a place and are very useful.

judging from your numbers, it sounds like you have a decent idea of what you're doing in the gym

you don't need a PT

get a gym partner & push each other. just as good as PT imo unless you aren't confident in your technique.

Ideal gym partner:
Has same schedule as you
Similar skill level or slightly higher
Tolerable on a day-to-day basis
