Too Much of a Sleepy Thing

Is it possible to have too much tryptophan in the body? Not really, Somer says. "Except if you end up eating a lot of tryptophan, it means you're eating a lot of protein and Americans already eat a lot of protein. It's the only nutrient we get too much of," she says.

"If you're getting even one serving of 3 ounces of meat, chicken, or fish; a couple of glasses of milk or yogurt; or if you're eating beans and rice, you will get all the amino acids you need and in there will be the tryptophan," Somer says.

For the average individual if you get like 80-100g it's already too much

Yes most Americans get more than enough protein.

I'm not surprised you didn't point out the absurdity of "the only nutrient we get too much of" with obesity being so rampant.

Americans get too many calories from carbs and fat easily.

There's a grain of truth in every stupid article.

Eating animal protein causes cancer (that's a medical fact) and it is well-described in oncology literature. Basically it has to do with turning "on" cellular growth, but of course cooked meat contains carcinogens in its own right.

That being said, either low intake or dominantly plant-based intake of protein seems to be enitrely beneficial (no surprise), and if you want to make gains, you're going to have to risk cancer. Casein and cooked meats are the worst offenders, for those who want to know.
Also, exercise and still getting your veggies mitigates heavily aginst the cancer-causing effects of heavy protein ingestion because a nutrient-dense diet and the benefits of frequent exercise are preventative and curative measures.

If you're the fat guy who doesn't exercise much and who eats chicken wings every Friday, you may as well wave the flag now.
If you're a gym rat who enjoys lifting, cardio, and eating your veggies, even with added protein ingestion I think you have to be in better standing than the dude sitting down for the Oprah marathon.

Yeah, that's nonsense.
Turning on cellular growth won't cause cancer. DNA mutations cause cancer.. do I even need to delve further? This should be demonstrable.

Also, highly vegan/vegetarian diets are associated with greater incidience of disease and generally poorer health.. even down to things such as depression.

Respectfully, you're wrong on both counts.

Cancer starts with cells that don't follow the usual orders of apoptosis; growth becomes uncontrollable, and these renegade cells, depending on the type of cancer, can either stream through the bloodstream and the lymphatic system, or reproduce (see any discussion of angiogensis for more information).
See http://www.thechinastudy.com/the-china-study/about/ for resources on disease (speicifally here, cancer) and vegetarianism

And, of course, it is worth noting that not all vegetarians eat an ideal diet. Just as gluten-free foods include Oreos. Vegetarians, on average, live longer than meat eaters. One of the most impressive studies I ever read showed that broccoli was more effective against cancer than chemotherapy and radiation therapy (combined) in five major types of cancer. The only statistical exception is in Northern Europe, where disease incidence is relatively low in the populations consuming meat. I am fairly sure that is due to consumption of fish.
