Is this just because I haven't really done them before, poor flexibility, bad form, or is this normal?

I don't have a spotter to check my form but I'm very conscious about keeping my back straight.

On a side note, without a spotter which would be the best way to go heavy on bench without killing myself? Slightly lower weight, smith machine, or heavy dumbbell chest press?

Ur Gon die and snap all your shit up. Prob soreness is ok if you're conscious about form like you said.

Db press is great, the smith machine is fine too, but won't help stabilizers or w/e because it's guided. Up to you really what you want to use.

Do you warm up and cool down and stretch before/after?

Well something you should consider is your core strength.

Deadlifts use your core, and a weak core can refer pain to your lower back. Everything is connected!
