Buddy asked this question. Wondering if anyone has specific articles explaining.

"Can anyone share some scientific articles that explore the relationship between an anabolic/catabolic state and protein synthesis? In other words, is it really not enough to just consume an excess of protein but instead must you have an excess of calories?"

One of the reasons people don't usually consume an excess of protein is because of the cost.

What is this in relation to? Bulking?

p.syn is regulated by free test.
the more test is secreted, the more free test, the greater p.syn
at critical bf% levels cortisol is shot up and test is dropped so p.syn is also down quite a bit.
at abnormally high bf% levels estrogen is rampant and free test reception is somewhat restricted.

I believe he's more-so talking about during a deficit or near maintenance. He wants an article to tell him he can't put on muscle mass/strength while in a slight deficit even with a surplus of protein.

The simple fact that when you're in a deficit the body is NOT getting enough substrate from food sources so you lose tissue mass to compensate. You cant directly control what the body breaks down for oxidation because all sources are drawn from to some degree but you can minimize muscle protein loss by decreasing the magnitude of the deficit and increasing free amino pool (greater blood aminos will likely influence flux through protein degradation in a beneficial way). That's the thinking at least.

IIRC, when i was searching i saw an article with guys around 25-35% bf, can't quite remember what % they said, but somewhere in that range and their free test levels had been reduced.
