ive never seen anyone talk negative about using one.. but this guy told me Bottled Water was much better/healthier than investing in a Machine

We distill tap water at our house...

In fact...we do this: tap water --> brita --> distill --> drink

Most bottled water is reverse osmosis so your friend is very redundant.
