You don't need to lift to develop muscle. I guarantee our ancestors never had any barbells to press or pull off the ground, hard manual labor can be the stimulus for growth if you're eating well enough. You don't have to be in a gym you just have to be performing work at a high enough resistance to induce the right muscular adaptation
