Yeah, pure horror. Makes one wonder if really squatting heavy is necessary for good health. A sad reminder for taking safety seriously during lifting.

Yeah. It puts gym culture in perspective. I remember when lifting 3 plates was considered lightweight. Now i find it more than enough for literally anything apart from professional sports or lifting for the sake of lifting. Gotta be honest, i didnt think one can break his/her neck that easily while squatting. Apparently its not even the first time this happens on video.

You can break your neck diving into shallow water from ground level. It’s not that hard. It sucks what happened to him, I just about completely blame the spotter for thinking he could zercher that much weight.

You can die on your commute to work even if you just walked on foot if were going that way. My point was just that you can get all the benefits of lifting without endangering yourself like that. Doing 500 lb+ lifts regularly feels like it could take a toll on the body in the long run. Not entirely sure tho. The forces we deal with are large, that i know.

I wouldnt really blame anyone. It was stupid not to use proper safety measures, but he failed to spot it because he tripped backwards himself. A bad decision followed by unlucky events imo.

The standard squat is dangerous in multiple ways. It has only became famous because you can load bigger numbers. Most of the people develop back problems even with perfect backsquats. The real good exercise is frontsquat. You can't load as much because balancing is harder but the movement itself forces you to have proper form at all times otherwise the barbell falls down. In case of an emergency you drop the weights in front. Strict military press and front squats are far superior exercises to bench press and backsquats.
