Well I can't speak for others because for some it could be shallow reasons and for others not at all.
In my case, it's about being the best I can be. I wanted to see how far I could go. If you do some research and don't waste too much time on biased papers, you'll see that steroids (like any other drug) can be beneficial if taken in proper doses. It has helped sick and wounded people for many years. The real issue is abuse or lack of knowledge when taking it. The only side effects I was affected by were the lack of energy post cycle, a mild testicular shrinkage during the cycle and the amplified mood during the cycle. By amplified mood I mean it amps up whatever personality you have originally. I typically have a short temper, so on roids I could get upset at fairly meaningless things. If you're a calm person to begin with, you won't really see a difference. If you're aggressive, you'll be even more aggressive, etc.
A bad post-cycle treatment or a heavy abuse of doses is what gets you all those pictures online. Flat out idiots with bad hygiene and half a brain thinking MOAR IS GEWD DAWG. They take double/triple doses of various steroids from shady laboratories for years on end and the public blames steroids when they get bitch tits, insane acne scars and kill their families.
If I take a truckload of sleeping pills, I'll die. Yet that's legal. Frankly, people see steroids as a bad thing because it gives a flat out competitive edge, so you'd essentially be forced to take them to compete and that's never a good thing. Even with steroids being illegal, people will go to great lengths to be at the top and that means abuse. In my opinion, steroids for recreational, personal use is absolutely fine. So long as you know what the fuck you're doing and understand that the more you take, the greater the risks.
Definitely some good points here. Appreciate the info. I'm not sold on the fact that taken responsibly, there are no adverse long term side effects. I'd have to do more research. While your personal experience is valuable, it doesn't mean that's how it will be for everyone.
Though I do think people are mad because of the needed to be competitive issue, I think people are more upset that people are willing to risk damaging themselves to get swole which they see as a selfish/shallow goal.
