You can speak for yourself, but you can't speak for everyone...

Maybe I just grew up somehere different... My teachers never told us we sucked... People don't tell me I can't run a 5k... I think some people, and I'm not even saying you're one of them, talk themselves into people doubting them when those people really don't care... but if it motivates a person to achieve great things then so be it, I just think it seems manufactured to me... Either that or there are a lot more people who hate guys at the gym than I realize...
I'm willing to say everyone who has seriously competed in competitions and are putting it all on the line, have had a rival in their head while training; you see that person doing what you're doing in training, but better, so you have to do better.

Doesn't have to be a teacher or a 5k, those were just examples.
Surely, someone has told you that you're unable to do something, and it's made you want to go do it. Could be something as silly as ride a unicycle.
I don't see how someone can have 'manufactured' motivation.
Either you're legitimately motivated or your not.
