How important is sleep? I know around 8 hrs + is preferred, but what if I go to the gym at night and only get 5-6 hours sleep, is it better to not go to the gym at all or will I still get positive results? (just not as good as if I had gotten 8 hrs sleep)
Sometimes I sleep 2-3 hours middle of the day, then go to the gym in the evening and at night I get maybe 5-6 hours sleep, does my "siesta" make up for the loss of those hours?
To make a long story short...for every 16 hours awake, you require approximately 8 hours of sleep. Basically a 2:1 ratio of awake to sleep for a positive recovery balance.
If you choose to stagger your sleep 5-6 hours and then 2-3 hours naptime...that is technically not as good as 8+ hours at once because of the REM sleep you encounter after 3-5 hours of sleep have gone by. The most important sleep is the pure REM sleep which gives your body the most bang for the buck so to speak.
It would be preferable to get 8+ hours straight...although if you can't work that out, staggering it 5-6 and then 2-3 later on is better than nothing.
You can still go to the gym on 5-6 hrs of sleep (with or without the nap) although your muscle gains and/or fat losses will be greatly hindered. You also will increase risk of injury, increase risk of getting sick, and increase the aging process of the body by putting it through excess stress without sufficient recovery time.
