i dont think sumos are much safer than conventional lifts at all. the only benefit of a sumo is that you get extra room to clear the hip from impingement but you sacrifice stability at the ankle and knee which can result in back instability anyway

i couldnt convential 135 for million bux
but sumo actually makes my back

cause you have short tight hamstrings and lateral rotators that have never seen the light of day. work out your range insufficiencies and you will be able to move properly
