Adrenal dump, fight or flight; all the same thing.

In a fight situation, under stress, your body dumps a bunch of adrenalin.

If you're not used to being in a fight situation, your body dumps a godd@mn LOT of adrenalin.  Heart rate goes up, fine motor control goes out the f?!king window, and if you're not used to the dump, you crash from it pretty quick.

That's one of the advantages to training a lot.  And I mean a LOT.  Putting yourself into the fight situation over and over, so that when it's showtime, you're more relaxed, and less likely to let that primordial, reptile part of the brain just dump lots of adrenalin, burning you out quick.

That's why that in self-defence if you train defence vs a guy with a knife you don't do fancy shit, cause you'll forget about that once your adrenaline starts pumping anyways.

Ahh, well said :) I have never been in a fight before, so basically if I were to fight I would get hit with a massive rush than crash huh.... hmmmm ive had big adrenaline rushes from ALMOST getting in fights so I know that one but never the real thing. Now im curious ^&^

*nods*

If you have a group of people that you can work with, see what it's like.

I have a group I regularly work with. A new cat dropped in to work with us; since we're casual about drop-ins, it was all good.

Dude wanted me to turn it up; wanted me to come at him harder. In the middle of us sparring, I felt my heart rate jump WAY up. Limbs felt shaky. And, sure as sh!t, I burned out right quick.

During sparring, no big deal.

In the ring, with someone who's *actively* trying to knock your head off, no bueno.

Truth.

The "knife defense" myth is one of my pet peeves, but I won't bore anyone with the details, unless someone *really* wants me to go into it.

I've had the pump a few times in some "close calls."

Ha, the one time I had adrenaline pumping right before I did squats. Some kid was talking shit and kept looking at me and whispering shit. So, of course, I call him out on it proceeding to walk at him. He dodges and gets back to his squatting. I was already pissed at him for taking the squat rack he KNEW I was on when I was away getting more weight.

Adrenaline before squats = ftw :)

explain this "myth"

Here's a helluva bang-up write up on common knife myths:

http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/knifelies.html

And, something simple you can do with anyone who claims to have the kung-fu for knife defense.

Have the defender wear a plain white t-shirt. You're armed with a regular red marker.

On the command of "go" from a third party, see how many times you can either "cut" or "stab" the defender, either in the torso, or along the arms.

Odds are gonna be pretty good that you've carved 'em up nicely.
