Hey SKC, just curious what advice you can give me on personal training?

I.e. why did you choose the certifications you have? What made them stand apart from the rest?

Also, how did u study for them? Did you buy the extremely expensive books the sites offer, or go somewhere else?

I think thats most of what i need to know. If there is anything else you can give me as far as info for Personal training (to be one, i dont need one) is concerned lemme know

Hey there.

Ok first of all, the most recognized certifications out there right now (that are preferred at most larger fitness clubs and large gyms) are: NASM, and ACSM.

Both of these are among the most expensive certifications to receive, however they tend to get more respect in the eyes of places trying to hire trainers.

In order to study for these, you are going to want to study the included material and study it well. A lot of questions on the exam are not necessarily something you will EVER use for Personal Training. I recommend studying at least 1-2 hours a day, bury your head in that book, take lots of notes, and try your best to memorize everything. It isn't THAT hard...but a lot of people take it very lackadaisically and end up underestimating the material.

There are also a multitude of study guides and practice exams out there...I haven't used them, but some people think they're great...although they are also expensive.

Lastly, info about trainers. I wouldn't exactly consider it a great career anymore. Lack of income for most (economy is hurting everyone right now) is a big problem. In addition, most clubs have plenty of trainers so a lot of people are freelancing. Although, it's hard to build a client base from scratch.

If you want to be a PT, you must realize that a LOT of time and effort will go into this career...much more than a lot of other careers that pay more right off the bat. However if you dedicate yourself properly and take time to build up a good strong client base, you can do pretty well for yourself in the future. The first 2 years are the most brutal by far.

I also recommend getting a B.A./B.S. in a parallel degree such as sports medicine, anatomy/physiology, kinesthesiology, etc.

Ah I see.

In that case, follow my previous instructions. Those are the best for minimizing spinal stress at the gym.

i think i would ask to much for u to post a 3 day routine for me with the exercises who won't impact my spine so much.. i would like something like chest/tri, back/bi, legs/shoulders..

and what about abs exercises?

The best bet is to stick to Icing it post workout, and pre-bedtime every day + taking anti-inflammatory meds like advil or ibuprofen when it acts up + use a wrist brace when lifting + avoiding lifting any excessive amounts of weight + avoid deadlifting or lat pulldowns which put tremendous strain on the wrists.

Simply put, No. It isn't generally a good habit to eat too much tuna for the mercury reason, however one can a day is not nearly enough to cause mercury poisoning. Enjoy.

about mercury, Ive been eating a tin of tuna every day for ALMOST a year now, but now i eat like 2 and sometimes 3 a day, is THAT gonna be bad for me?

Back when I was using EC stack, I was taking 20mg E/200mg C x3 @ 200lbs/5'10

What dosage do you recommend for an average sized woman ( 5'7, 150lbs)

3 day plan for reduced spine activity -

Day1 - Chest/Bis/Forearms
Day2 - Back/Tris/Abs
Day3- Shoulders/Legs/Traps

Day 1 - Machine Chest Press (do not arch your back) 5x5,Machine Incline Press 5x5 , Cable Flies 21's (3 sets), seated machine curls (5x12), seated preacher curls (5x12), seated DB hammer curls (5x12), DB wrist curls until failure.

Day 2 - Seated Machine Row 5x10 (Go very light and avoid putting stress against the spine with a wide grip), standing rope rows 5x10 (also very light and wide grip), close-grip dips 5x8, rope pulldowns 5x12, seated v-crunches 5x15, laying weighed crunches 5x15

Day 3 - Seated Shoulder Press Machine 5x5, Seated Lat Raise Machine 5x12, Seated Leg Extension 5x8, Seated Leg Curl 5x8, Seated Donkey-Calf Raise 3x10, Seated DB Shrugs until failure for 5 sets

As with everything, excess leads to problems.

I would always try to mix things up...especially with diet. if you go on a tuna kick for a few weeks, it won't hurt you. However if you eat tuna religiously for years with 1-2-3 + times a day...it MIGHT have a negative effect on you.

I would try to stick to changing up your diet at least once a month and trying not to eat the EXACT same things for more than a few days in a row. I usually eat chicken every day, but after 2-3 days of chicken I will have a day or two of just fish, then a day or two of just beef, etc.

I also try to keep my supplements changed out or cycled at semi-regular intervals (every 3-4 months usually I take about 2 weeks off)

Well first of all, those dosages are VERY low for a male of 200 lbs and 5'10.

You should have been taking 1g (1000mg) 3x a day of vitamin C (minimum and not including multi vitamin), and at least 400mg of vitamin E 1x per day (not including multi vitamin)

for a woman of 5'7 150 I would say 2g vitamin c per day (1g 2x per day) and 400mg of vitamin E (200mg 2x per day) would be proper.

Also do not forget the vitamin D, Vitamin B and multivitamin. (5,000 IU vitamin d 1x per day and 1G good B-complex 1x per day)
