I'm assuming to cure the tension, try to pull the slack out of the bar and accelerate through rather than tug
Pull the bar closer to the legs
In terms of keeping the elbows up, any recommendations to help with this, either cues during the lift or accessory work to help with it?
Well, the pull in both the clean and the snatch should start real smooth and controlled, so the slack should not really set in like it would during a DL. There are very few good lifters who pull fast from the floor.
Elbows up is just practicing pulls, do high pulls (snatch mainly) as a exercise of their own to really learn the pattern. You can also do complexes of like 2 highpulls + 1 hang snatch. Pulling before the lift can make it easier to imitate the barpath and performing from the hang forces you to accelerate at the correct positions.
Bar closer to legs will be solved through pulls aswell.
