Not completely unheard of.. the Tag Heuer 1887 chronograph in rose gold my dad gave me for my 21st cost ~  $5000. the IWC Pilot is an absolutely beautiful watch.

The IWC pilot is an absolute beauty mate.

I guess more impressive feat since he actually bought it with his own money :p

O, I know it's far from unheard of! I have looked at them a few times, and can afford to buy them, but I can't currently justify buying one. I'll see it as reasonable to buy expensive watches when I'm clearing $100k a year by a good margin, have my little pile of debt gone, and a house paid off. Until then, I'll stick to the few hundred dollar ones lol.

That was why I was curious as to what he does for a living. It may be unjustifiable for me to spend that on a watch now, but idk his circumstance.

(even though i say 'expensive', a $5,000 watch is on the very low end when it comes to luxury watches - some of the movements in watches, just by themselves, can be $20k-$30k)

Indeed.. Or the recently sold Patek Phillipe that went for $25 million or so... :D

my $5000 TAG is still only considered mid range at best, in almost any other hobby/industry that would be high end as fuck.

According to this site: http://www.devonbuy.com/watch-brand-hierarchy/
they put Tag Heuer in Tier 3 aka mid level luxury along with brands like Baum & mercier, Paul Picot, Itay Noy etc.

I think they placed IWC way too highly though, I wouldn't place them in the same boat as Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin , Audemars Piguet or A. Lange & Söhne etc. (Tier 1, top luxury brands) but rather the Tier 1b (high end luxury in demand) OR Tier 2 'popular luxury" along with Rolex, Omega, Breitling etc.

I've read into this somewhat. I've heard of only a handful of the high-end on that list, but all of the 'luxury' of course.

I think the 'high-end' is for people who are really into watches and everything about them. While the 'luxury' list is for those who want something nice, don't care about watches as much, and use them as a symbol of wealth and status haha.

Inherited a watch from my grandfather recently, ive been told it's a rolex that he got from his father so it's pretty old. I'm interested to see what it's like to have a decent watch but I definitely feel like it won't be a casual thing to wear, I'd be terrified of breaking it seeing as how long it's been in the family at this point. I'm going to receive it in a few months as a grad gift from my grandmother will update if I still see this thread

I don't see the point of watches from a utility perspective. We have other ways to check time nowadays ... So is it really worth paying thousands of $'s for a fashion statement?

Absolutely. A watch is the only real piece of jewelry a man can wear. Women can easily justify spending (A man's) money on expensive diamond ear rings, diamond rings, diamond/pearl necklaces etc that cost thousands of dollars, so why shouldn't a man also have a $xk or even $xxk piece of jewelry on?

The watch on your wrist defines who you are and where you come from.. They're like the car you drive...

Wearing a swatch/Casio ? You a broke ass nigga driving an old Volvo/Pontiac if you even have a car
Wearing a Seiko/Tissot/Certina? low-level employee, drives BMW 3 series / Mercedes C-class / Audi A4
Wearing a Tag Heuer / Longines / Breitling? mid level manager, drives BMW 5 series / Mercedes E-class / Audi A6 / Cadillac
Wearing an Omega/Rolex/IWC? High level director, drives BMW 7 series / Mercedes S-class / Audi A8 / Jaguar / Porsche
Wearing a Patek Philippe / Audemars Piguet / Vacheron Constantin? C-level officer (CEO, CFO, board director / shareholder, investment bankers, hedge fund managers etc), drives Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Maybach, Bugatti. Pagani etc..

and if you have a time piece with multiple complications, diamonds, platinum etc you're most likely a billionaire / collector
