Go listen to Mark Rippetoe and his explanation of a good athlete and a great athlete.. essentially he says that two athletes with the same skill level but different compositions, the one that's more muscular will be always better.

LOL

I don't need to have someone tell me that to know it's true.

That's obviously going to be the case. That's with the idea that their weight training to add mass was in the off season. You're not going to see successful athletes do crazy weight training to gain mass during the season.

No high caliber athlete will be hitting pr's during the season.

Well no fucking shit... if they have the exact same skills , same height then obviously being stronger would be better, but that's a fucking terrible level because athletes aren't really ever the same skill level. Each one will excel at different things but being stronger and faster may make up for lack of skill.

Wut.

My post was saying that every athlete should lift during the season, but it should never be to improve lifts, which ultimately leads to very few cases that an athlete experiences soreness on the level that others were referring to in this thread. Obviously anyone will be a little sore after lifting, but if an athlete is lifting at the level of where they are too sore to train at an optimal level, then they're doing it wrong.

one thing I try to tell people who are new is to focus on getting stronger on compounds above all else, and the gains will come.

I say this cause I notice so many people will lift for 6months to a year and still only benching 135 squatting like 225 and dead like 275-315 and wondering why they still aren't getting any real gains.
