Thought this was salient to the discussion.

“The idea is that fatness is indicative of personal immorality, and that fat people need to redeem ourselves through weight loss. Discussions of marriage and discussions of weight loss share some of the same lexicon, such as ‘being good’ and ‘cheating’ (on a spouse or a diet). Cultural expectations around marriage and body size go back to the Protestant obsession with discipline, merit and morality. I think there is a strong cultural belief that an immoral person—in this case, a fat person—does not deserve to have access to love or the sanctity of marriage because those are things we ‘earn’ though discipline, merit and morality.”

While it doesn't touch on everything trainer guy brought up, I think there's enough overlap to make the read worthwhile.

(And yes, it's a Salon article. Rotated through my FB feed from one of my female friends. Go figure.)

Usually it just tends to be a complete lack of will power.

you know what this world needs daniel? a health care system where coverage scales with lifestyle factors like exercise, smoking and drinking habits. if you wanna smoke your fuking life away then you can pay for your lung cancer therapy or CHF treatment and transplant. if you do everything within your power to avoid getting lung cancer and you still have the shit luck to get it, its covered. let the weak minded die off and the strong minded survive. occupational hazards are acceptable as long as you take necessary precautions. another thing, implement a tax like they have in wales where youre charged based on the size of your car's gas tank. so many people dont have cars there cause it aint worth, they just cycle everywhere

Interesting, I always used this argument as well except the problem was that it's apparently wrong.

Smokers, obese people etc actually cost the taxpayers less money because while they may use the system more often they day much much earlier which leads healthy individuals to actually cost the healthcare system more in the long run.

I haven't done research on this so I don't know how true it is but it was from a peer-reviewed paper I read a few months ago.

I seen this on my local news station a week or 2 back.. they were bitching because he was "fat shaming" . Makes me sick that fat is becoming the norm and the people that are ridiculed for judging them. People arent supposed to be fat.

*shrugs*

I suppose it's a matter of priorities, and perceived quality of life.

Of course, "fat" runs a VERY wide range (no pun intended) of body types, from that round Santa kind of belly Roy Nelson has going on, up through effectively immobile.

At the end of the day, it's up to the individual to decide whether or not their health + physique factor into their quality of life.

If you're overweight, and you have no problem whatsoever with that: more power to ya.

If you're overweight, and you **do** have a problem with it, ultimately, it's on you to fix it. You're the one that has to pick up the weight, you're the one that has to get on the treadmill or get on that bike, you're the one that has to mind what they eat.

But, again, if you're cool rockin' that Gabriel Iglesias status, get on wit'cho bad self.

This guy cares too much about things he can't control.
Who cares what other people put into their bodies, it doesn't affect him any.

This, I'd agree with.

But... where do we draw that line?

srs question. This country is new to the whole "socialized medical care" thing, so how does it work other places?

And I'm not just talking obesity. What about smokers? Drinkers? People with poor eating habits, but who otherwise aren't obese (but have terrible bloodwork?)
