This article summarizes (with some source material) 50 reasons why GMOS are harmful (not just to us, but also within a greater ecology/economy): http://www.raw-wisdom.com/50harmful.

I did some asking around and some research a while ago on GMOs and I am fairly convinced they are harmful to human health (spoke to a naturopath and then read up on the subject extensively). However just due to simple ecological problems (related to monocultures and the carbon emission and energy waste in the manufacture of meat and feed crops for livestock), GMOs are a bad idea. But really, if you have the choice, why buy stuff you have no assurance is clean and healthy?

Not that it will influence anyone, but one of my old grad school friends was into GMO research and around that time he also got into biomedical ethics. He seemed to literally jump away from GMOs once he started doing his research. I would say he was a very thorough student, but tbh I don't know exactly what information he found because at the time I already wrote off GMOs on ecological grounds (pun intended).

But here's food for thought:

- do your own thinking
- do your own research
- make your own decision

If you're worried about what you're eating, get the information that will ease your worries. I remember being told by a vegan friend once that if you spend your time worrying about what you eat, you're just stressing out anyway. Stress is harmful, so basically either stop worrying or find out what is best for you by putting in the time to understand it. I've tried to do both :)

Ya man, nothing wrong with foods that are primarily created in labs w/ chemicals rather than actual food.

If you have real studies showing gmos are harmful I'll avoid them.

One of my early biology professors was a geneticist at Arizona State. For one of his labs, he told us he had the students pick 'organic' fruits and vegetables from Whole Foods. They went on to do tests of some sort (I don't know enough about what they did to give a fully accurate account) on the different 'specimens' they purchased, and found a number of them to have genetic modifications. Just thought that might be seen as interesting...

For the defense of GMOs, I argued the case about this months ago. When doing a quick extrapolation of the estimated amount of arable land in the world, the estimated number of people in the world, the estimated amount of arable land needed for crops to sustain a single person, and the estimated general yield of GMO crops vs Organic crops, it has come to the point of being next to impossible to feed the population without the higher output that is a resultant of GMO crops. Whether they are good or bad for health, it can be argued that it comes down to either getting rid of GMOs and then the population can't be fed, or keeping GMOs so the people can be feed with a chance (yet not statistically backed) of problems in the future. So, choose starvation now, or complications down the road.

If you are concerned about GMOs and have the resources to eat all organic (if it is actually organic to begin with?), then do so! If you don't have the resources, consider growing a garden - seeds are cheap! If that isn't an option, then you can decide whether you want to starve by omitting questionably (?) harmful foods, or eating them and living until complications arise.
