They're not just a support muscle in these 2 exercises, they do part of the lift. Just like chin ups, I mean yes they're for back, but they're also one of the best mass builders for biceps. Do some heavy box squats without a belt then try very heavy front squats without a belt and chances are if your squat was already fairly strong, your core will give out first. You'll see the feeling is 10x worse than doing direct ab work.
