this applies to rugby too, but any time your toes are angled out you are more prone to a collapsed ankle, where the arch in your foot flattens out. this by itself isnt a problem while you're just standing there but as soon as you start involving loads like a barbell or a ruck, you expose the knee of that leg with the collapsed arch to mcl/acl/meniscus stress. too much stress or repeated stress can easily lead to a tear in one or all of those ligaments (theyre connected to some degree by the joint capsule)
Key words here. I point my toes out and have analyzed my form via video meni meni times. My arches do not collapse and my knees do not cave. So, I don't think this is a must for everyone.
I would agree that most people would have issues though.
