There are reasons to believe something is lost when you remove a piece of densely innervated skin in a region that requires tactile stimulation to function as it is supposed to. There appears to be no major harm done, but research is somewhat lacking. Caution is always good to have along when making decisions about irreversible things, especially when there's no strong indicator for the necessity of the procedure.

If we dont know what will we lose, yet don't have reasons to do the procedure, which is irreversible on top of everything ... then why do it?
