LOL girl fire fighters.. what do you do when you need to pull people out of a burning building and all you got on your squad with you is females..

I could find plenty of females that are probably stronger than you and most men.

Thunder bays physical isn't harder than most... And females have passed it before.

I have heard otherwise from people who have taken the test here and other places as well as professional firefighters for 20-30 years. Just word of mouth. Whether it's right or not I can't say for sure. The test they do here is a lot harder than the CPAT test many places do though, from my understanding

The CPAT is a joke

Did you come up here and take the test here? And I'm not kidding, I've never heard of any women passing the test here (though in the past it may have happened, but I am unaware of it). No woman has ever gotten on the fire department here. That is a fact, unfortunately.

It's not the cpat, you're right. However it's the exact same test as many other departments. It's all explained on their recruitment page. Fairly standard for anyone that is in moderate shape.

gotcha. And yeah. I think Windsor does the same testing. Probably many others. idk why some departments are switching over to CPAT. The program coordinator from our class always sends us emails of cities that are hiring all over Canada so we can apply. It's surprising how many do CPAT now

And yeah, moderate shape gets you through it. Mind you, of the 100 guys who moved on to the physical testing here back in June 2013, almost 40 of them failed the test lol

It's weird the things you notice that make an exercise hard because you didn't think to train that specific thing.

Like the rope pull raising the 90 lb (or there abouts) hose up 3 storeys and back down 3 times. It's not hard but the first thing to get fatigued is your grip strength because of the work gloves you have to wear. My grip was roasted by the end and I know 2 guys who failed the physical last time because their grip failed them on that exercise. I'd have never even considered grip strength needing improvement for an exercise like that before. Now I know. It's definitely good to go through it once to know what to expect and learn where to improve for next time

EDIT:

LOL! they reduced the weight for the rope pull. I had heard that a lot failed from the rope pull, but never thought they'd reduce the weight. it used to be 39kg. which I guess is closer to 85 lbs, not 90.

What they don't tell you on the city recuitment page is that for all 7 exercises you have to wear an 18kg weight vest, 3.5kg ankle weights and work gloves for all 7 tests.
it's a moot point for all of them except the hose carry. wearing the ankle weights, 40lb vest and having another 85 lbs on your shoulder going up to the 4th floor and back down 3 times is a real bitch. Some people crush it, I fatigued hard near the top on the 3rd trip up. If you don't do it quick enough you fail, and there isn't any time for breaks. And if you skip any stairs at all you automatically fail too. lol they don't tell you how much time you have to complete it, just whether or not you're on pace or not.

The ladder for the ladder lift is 26kg iirc. around 57.5lbs I think?

I honestly couldn't even tell you the weights of the objects. Just focus on completing the task, that's it. It's all practical application, so as long as you keep telling yourself that, it's all good. Give em hell buddy

I know the weights of the tests because they sent out a more detailed paper that has to be signed by a doctor when you are selected to partake in the physical. I have a copy on my computer from the probationary testing in 2013. The weights are right, at least for TBay.

And thanks, I'm gonna give it all I got! Last time I spent a week training leading up to the test (was working crazy hrs out of town) and passed. This time I'll have spent 7 months training. I'm not fucking around this time.

Good man. I can honestly tell you, it's the best job ever. Getting your job offer is a wicked day, however the first day that you start is even better. Wearing the uniform of your chosen city is such an honour. Keep me posted man. If you need anything, just give me a shout
