hi raynor, i'm fairly new to lifting weights and it's something that i've wanted to do for a while now.  I only have access to dumbbells so my question is this:  is it possible to have a full workout routine consisting of only dumbbell exercises?

a little about myself, i'm 140 lbs and about 5' (8-9").  preferably i would like to add weight, ideally another 15-20 lbs.  i did look at cmburns's 5 day split and i was thinking of following that.  what's your take on all this?  and if possible do you think you could devise me a rough sketch of a routine?

thanks!

yes this is possible...do you also have a bench to go with the dumbbells? get back to me.

Quick question, when benching what should my grip look like? (How far apart hands should be)

depends on what you are trying to do.

for pure power, position of maximum comfort and strength (depends on the person, but usually wider is easier)

for tricep work, close grip (hands about 5 inches apart)

for standard chest and tricep, go to shoulders width

for mostly chest and less triceps, go 3-4 inches wider than the shoulders on each side

You can wrap the thumbs around for more safety and grip...or choose to leave the thumbs on the same side as the other fingers for lighter weight chest work (pumping and hemovascular training)

use 2 phone books of the equal size to brace the bench on an incline. if these are not available, try rolled up towels of the same size to elevate the bench. Do the same for decline.
