i think you are comparing two things that are completely different.
There are certain limits on the body and I have always seen that the limits for gaining mass at a certain time period are much smaller than the limits for losing weight.
If you take two people for instance with the same body type, same weight, same height, everything identicle and tell one to gain 10lbs of mass, and the other to lose 10lbs of fat/water weight, which one is going to get there faster....
I dont know why you ask me for my opinion and then don't even accept it unless it goes along /w what you said...it is 2 different things.
Some people have a harder time doing different stuff..it's not that cut and dry as you made it..but in the example you gave..losing body fat would be much faster.
The person loseing 10 pounds could do it over night /w water weight..or if it's real fat, they could lose 1 pound a week, and be healthy..maybe more or less, depends on several things.
Gaining 10 pounds naturally would take 10 months, at the min.
A natural person can expect to gain 1 pound of muscle a MONTH..if you can any more weight than that, it's fat. 12 pounds a year is a ton..go to the store and ask for 12 pounds of the leanest meat they have, then picture yourself spreading that on your body.
Regardless, you can't really compare the two..two different things.
