this is what I was thinking...take a large empty bowl and fill a glass full of water inside the bowl. Take your shaft and jam it into the glass as far as it will go. Measure the volume of water displaced by dong (water that spilled into the bowl) and use typical shaft density and volume measurements to get a ballpark weight.........
