sounds like he's already eating enough if his strength is going up, eating 1000kcal over maintenance will make you fat.

Strength can go up while maintaining weight, strength can even go up while losing weight for beginners

Strength gains can be a result of neural adaptation, getting more efficient at the movement, bigger muscles, more confidence, learning to use a belt

OP wants to gain weight, mass gainer is a good idea, and cheaper than 'real food'

So, what I'm gathering from mostly everyone is that I should stay away from mass gainers that are sold from stores and just make my own?

I'm a very thin framed guy and getting fat really isnt a concern.

Would using a mass gainer be in addition to protein shakes and too?

depends on your nutrition requirements. there are BMR calculators you can easily find online to give you an idea of your resting calories

http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

something like that can give you a rough idea of the amount of calories your body needs in relation to activity level. Add calories as needed to gain weight. So if you needed 3,000 calories to maintain your weight given your current lifestyle and amounts of exercise, you would need to eat over that to gain weight. A lot of people do 500 over, but you can play around with it

and there's a lot of opinion on how much protein you need. some people say much less and others much more. 1 gram per pound of weight is a safe mark (I've seen as low as .79g/lb LEAN mass, to as much as 2 grams per pound TOTAL weight- the people who know actually know what they're talking about tend to be on the lower end).
