I'm joining a special ops unit soon (3 months) after having served in normal infantry. The cardio there used to be pretty lame and not hard at all, 2 miles in 12 minutes. However, now they upped the standards up to 2 miles in 10 minutes as well as a 300 meter spring in 45 seconds. I've been bulking so I haven't been doing cardio at all. My question is, how can I keep doing the cardio needed without losing muscle mass. And yes, I know "calories in>calories burnt" etc. Just looking for a more in depth answer.

:P you did answer it yourself... Calories in is key - be it working on a meal plan which fits your training and duties or getting access to calorie dense foods and weight gainers, you need that constant intake.

Cycling your types of cardio (i.e. between steady state and HIIT might help you to see more gains in that regard) might help.

I would ask anybody from the clique you're trying to get into or a senior staff member of that division what they would recommend.

Best of luck,
Baerr

interesting. so are u saying as far as cycling the type of cardio. u mean that it will help prevent muscle loss? and focus more on fat? if u change up the type of cardio like every other week?

i dont know shit. but just asking, cause id have thought staying at one type would help keep muscle? cause then once ur body adapts to that type of routine, that it will be more efficient at dealing with the energy loss? or whatever? and ur endurance would be better cause more practice at same type of movement, so if ur body is more efficient then it uses less energy? so u would keep more fat but also muscle?

If you are actually SF, then muscle mass is literally going to be the last thing on your mind.

by gains i meant cardiovascular gains... sort of the way athletes train for endurance! :)

diet is the key (protein intake, total calories, etc.) to preventing muscle loss and some people believe HIIT is superior vs. regular steady state cardio for helping you see results in targeting fat loss, but that isn't where i was going. He has asked how to meet the cardiovascular expectations. :)

Just because my career is in a specific field that doesn't mean i have to give up on all my hobbies (getting big at the gym) and not caring about what i look aesthetically.

if your career is very risky

then u prob wanna do things that maximize your success at your career

its not like your career is something where your physical fitness matters or anything, so yea go for aesthetics....

special forces, can be viewed as a highly ranking position, where u should want to be the best u can be at it
