I'm squatting close to 500 lbs actually. I'd take paused squat over leg press for this purpose any days.

What are your lifts?

Just make sure you're squatting with proper form. Layne Norton has a pretty good squat tutorial up on youtube that I'd check out if I were you. I wouldn't worry much about the weight you're pushing as you're just starting.
