well if it hurts, you're doing it right

don't use straps, exactly what will hinder grip improvement. i'd use hook sparingly, do what you can without it, and finish your work sets with it when you have to

Ideal technique for hookgrip is to grip the tip of your thumb (nailarea) with middlefinger and then placing the indexfinger over the joint.

Inb4 people complain about having manlethands when 56kg weightlifters can do hookgrip for snatch.

Oly bars are 28mm and gym bars are often over 30mm thought.

Huh, I've never really felt a difference in neither Eleiko PL bars (29mm) and cheap gymbars.
